Airman comes home to handicapped dog from 6 month deployment!

My husband has been deployed for 6 months. Before he left, we adopted (are long term foster parents for SNARR-a special needs animal rescue) a special needs puppy with a severe birth defect. Emma and her daddy were very close! It broke her, and his, heart when he left. When I come in the door, she normally sits at the end of the hallway and waits for me to pick her up. This time, when her daddy came in, she went to him! Mikey (the tan dog) was so happy he cried! Gotta love homecomings!!
Many have asked why Emma doesn't have a doggy wheelchair. Emma has had several wheelchairs. Unfortunately, she refuses to use any of them. We have had custom ones made even. We have worked with the companies to teach her to use it, but she will have nothing to do with it or with a "drag bag" or harness. She's always been this way. Emma has no idea she's "special". She loves life and runs and plays well on her own outdoors. She just has a little trouble on the tile indoors. We do have rugs layed out for her all over the house, but we did not have any in this hallway at the time. That's why you see her hopping to him. Also, Emma is still under the medical care of SNARR, the special needs rescue group that we got her from as foster parents. So that they can keep a close eye on her, they have agreed to let us keep her for the rest of her life (Woohoo!) but still pay her medical bills, which are quite expensive at times. Fred Stobaugh can't sing a note, but there was a song in his heart ready to come out. So when his wife of almost 73 years passed away, the 96-year-old Illinois man put both his grief and tender memories on paper and sent it off to Green Shoe Studio's singer-songwriter contest. As the only snail-mail entry, it caught the eye of Jacob Colgan, who was so moved by the lyrics and the story that he put them to music. Now "Oh Sweet Lorraine," the ode to the A&W carhop Stobaugh met in 1938 and "fell in love with right away," is on iTunes. Stobaugh pronounced the finished song "wonderful, just wonderful," but it's a sad kind of wonderful. "I really, really miss her," he said. "Just don't seem right."

The mix breed dog named Tuna has a very prominent overbite and seemingly wrinkled skin. His owner posts pictures of him on Instagram and the page has over 380,000 followers.

Even some of the strangest looking animals can somehow still be adorable.

A dog named Tuna is one example.

Described as a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix breed, he has a very prominent overbite and seemingly wrinkled skin. His owner, 31-year-old Courtney Dasher adopted Tuna in 2011 at a Los Angeles Farmer's Market.

She stated "His rescuer said that he was thrown out and found on the side of a road near San Diego, which evidently traumatized him, because he would squirm on his belly when he attempted to walk."

After spending only a week with Tuna, she fell in love. She opened an Instagram account filled with photos of the sweet pooch.

Each day, she posts a new picture and the page has over 380,000 followers. Just going by the images, anyone can see Tuna is now very happy with his new life.

The dog's adorable face is now featured on iPhone covers and clothing. A portion of the profits goes to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

when their best friend says let’s go for a ride in the car.

My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech

Zach Sobiech is a 17 year old diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. With only months to live, Zach turned to music to say goodbye. Zach turned 18 years old today (May 3rd, 2013) and continues his fight against cancer with a smile that can change the world. Happy Birthday Zach! You are in all of our prayers!

After months of surgery, diet and exercise, Obie the obese dachshund is on the move again, traveling around Portland, Ore. and teaching students how to keep their pets in shape — and how they can stay healthy themselves in the process.

This past Tuesday, the formerly corpulent canine underwent surgery to remove the excess skin between his legs that resulted from his successful weight loss. Since he was adopted by Nora Vanatta last May, (first as a foster, then permanently in January), Obie has lost 40 pounds, and he’s still got another seven to go.

In the meantime, however, he’s been doing work in the community, helping to educate students young and old. “I took him to one of the private schools in Portland to talk to ninth graders about nutrition,” Vanatta told TODAY.com. “I talked about weight loss in people and in pets, and the students were very smart and very engaged!”
